Back-on-Track Italy is part of the European volunteer movement promoting the revival of night trains across Europe. Our collective works to raise awareness among the Italian public about the potential of night trains as a sustainable solution to the climate crisis and for more responsible mobility.
Our Mission
Night trains represent a concrete and sustainable alternative to short and medium-haul flights. Through studies, campaigns, and European networking, we work to:
– Inform about the environmental benefits of night trains
– Support the development of new night routes in Italy
– Better connect Italy to the European train network
Recent Successes
In February 2025, Back-on-Track Italy welcomed the first European Sleeper train in Venice. It was a great moment for the city and for Italy, that finally had a night train service to two new European Union countries: Belgium and The Netherlands. These two adds to the existing night train connections to Germany and Austria. We also hope for a swift return of a connection to France (see the Thello photo below).

Towards an Italian Structure
Back-on-Track Italia is organizing as a “Associazione di Volontariato” (ODV), following the model of the European organization Back-on-Track Europe AISBL. This structuring will allow us to strengthen our action for sustainable mobility in Italy.
Upcoming Events
The European Night Train Conference will take place in Berlin from September 26-28, 2025. A unique opportunity to meet operators, institutions, and activists from across Europe interested in the future of sustainable mobility.
